“Wildwood” hit theaters on Oct. 23, marking Laika’s first feature film in seven years, following 2019’s “Missing Link.” Directed by Travis Knight, the studio’s president and CEO, the fantasy is based on the 2011 novel by Colin Meloy, frontman of indie rock band the Decemberists, with illustrations by his wife, Carson Ellis.

Set in Portland, Ore., the film follows Prue McKeel (voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a young girl who ventures into a mysterious forest after her baby brother is abducted by a flock of crows. Accompanied by her classmate Curtis (Jacob Tremblay), she discovers a hidden world populated by magical creatures, warring factions and dangerous adversaries.
The star-studded voice cast also includes Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, Awkwafina, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Maya Erskine, Tom Waits and Richard E. Grant.
The film marks a major milestone for the Oregon-based animation studio, which has carved out a devoted following with its painstakingly handcrafted features, including “Coraline,” “ParaNorman” and “Kubo and the Two Strings.” Laika has described “Wildwood” as its most ambitious production to date, with 231 puppets and 136 locations created to bring Meloy’s fantastical world to life.
The limited-edition “Wildwood” SteelBook is available to preorder on Amazon now, with a release date still to be confirmed.
